August 09, 2019 | 18:04 IST | Editorial |

It’s quite natural that child artists eventually rise to fame in the film industry. Kamal Haasan and Sridevi were examples of actors who started their careers as child artists but eventually became famous. Hansika Motwani is another example of an actress who rose to fame by starting her career as a child artist.

Hansika began her television career with a serial called Shaka Laka Boom Boom. She later acted in the Indian serial Des Mein Niklla Hoga Chand, for which she received the Favorite Child Award at the Star Parivaar Awards, and appeared as one of the children in Koi Mil Gaya with Preity Zinta and Hrithik Roshan.

She is now one of the most sought after actresses in the south and has acted in almost major languages down south. As the actress turns 28 today here is a look back some of her most memorable Tamil films

Oru Kal Oru Kannadi

This film is definitely a breakthrough film in her career. The 2012 film was a blockbuster in the box office and is still considered to be one of her best performances. ‘Her portrayal of Meera is considered as a landmark in Tamil cinema and this film gave her the boost she needed. Hansika had won the SIIMA award for the Best Actress.

Theeya Velai Seiyyanum Kumaru

This film can be described as a film that is a complete family entertainer. The 2013 film directed by Sundar C featured  Siddharth, Santhanam, Hansika Motwani and Ganesh Ventarman in leading roles. Sundar C had tasted success in 2012 with ‘Kalakalappu’ and had delivered another winner in ‘Theeya Velai Seyyanum Kumaru’.

Hansika as Sanjana does her job of looking pretty very well and is a treat to watch . Even though there wasn’t much scope for her to act, but she still delivers a decent and amazing performance. The ‘Lovukku Yes’ song is one such Hansika special which kept the audience grooving to its beat and was a chartbuster back then.

Maan Karate

The 2014 film starring Siva Karthikeyan and Hansika Motwani was of the thought out projects in that year. Maan Karate combines elements like fantasy and the regular brand of commercial entertainment in true Siva Karthikeyan style.

Hansika is pretty and cherubic as ever and looks gorgeous in the song and dance sequences. Other than that, she gets to be a loyal, unsuspecting and supporting girlfriend who stands by her guy. She had become a common household name after her performance in Maan Karate as this film gave her the loyal girlfriend image.

Romeo Juliet

The 2015 film directed by Lakshmanan was a perfect blend of all elements that made it a perfect commercial Rom-Com film. he film’s story had struck the right chord among the youth as it is something that is common with many relationships today. When relationships don’t last long because of money and when the girl moved you because she thought you were rich and now wants to dump you because she cannot accept a middle-class guy as the man of her dreams. The Tamil film Romeo Juliet is also about love but refreshingly, a very practical and realistic take on this ubiquitous feeling.

Hansika’s characterization emerges as different and real which you don’t expect to see in a rom-com such as this. Aishwarya of Romeo Juliet is a never-before-done role for the beautiful Hansika in her career and she has essayed it with a flourish. She fits the role perfectly and brings to table the advantages of her innocent and cute looks to give her character the right dimension. It is also appreciable that she is accepting such characters with a difference and yet playing to her strengths.

The 2017 film directed by Lakshman was a film that was well appreciated by the audience. Even though the base of the film was similar to the 1994 Hollywood film ‘Face-off’ featuring John Travolta and Nicolas Cage, director Lakshmanan was able to strike the right chord and win the hearts of fans. The film featured Jayam Ravi, Hansika and Arvind Swami in lead roles.

Hansika plays Jayam Ravi’s love interest and er performance was stand out from all the others as she breaks the stereotypes of a woman who is seen queueing up outside a TASMAC shop. If you think her name is a pun, then the joke is on you because Kalyani would have been more suitable.

She is the one on the film who adds some fun into the film and refreshed the mood of the audience. Her charm and her beauty is the winning aspect of the film. In an interview, she had stated that Bogan is a film that she enjoyed because she was pushed out of her comfort zone.
