“KinnarAkhada” a transgender group to be part of Khumbh Mela 2019

Struggling for past two years to get into the Kumbh Mela, this TransGen group has won the battle against all odds and will now be the part of Kumbh Mela 2019 and they are known as KinnarAkhadha. The news was confirmed by the statement given by the head priest of the Akhada.
The Kumbh Mela, for the first time, will see participation from “KinnarAkhada”, whose head priest calls it a step forward towards inclusiveness of transgenders in the society.
Laxmi Narayan Tripathi, a member of the Akhada called it an ‘Akhada beyond sexuality’. She also said,
“For us, this participation is about mainstream society accepting us. The creator is within us and once we die, we will go back to him. Our doors are open for all.”

Pavitra, secretary of KinnarAkhada, who was there for the past two years fighting for their rights to get into Kumbh Mela and also for acceptance from other fields such as arts, music and other. She said,
“We were eager to be at Kumbh and now that we have arrived, the general public and pilgrims have been very supportive. We can see respect and acceptance in everyone’s eyes for us and it feels very good.”

Finally, we witness something this amazing in this very first month of this New Year. It’s definitely the New Beginning for the New and a Better India for everybody – irrespective of cast, colour, religion and now with the proud feeling of gender.
