26 years of Vijayism: His iconic movies

From mass to class, from children to adult, Vijay sure did make it way big in the Cinema. To celebrate 26 years of Vijay in cinema, let’s look back a few of his iconic movies.

Poove Unakaaga (1996)

Though the actor debuted at the age of 18 with Naalaiya Theerpu in 1992, his breakthrough came with Poove Unakaaga in 1996. It was a blockbuster movie, starring legendary actors like M.N.Nambiar and Nagesh.

Love Today (1997)

His next Blockbuster came in 1997, Love Today. Directed by debutant Balasekaran, Vijay played the role of a college student playing a one-sided love affair.

 

Kaathalukku Mariyathai (1997)

The same year saw another super hit in the form of Kadhalukku Mariyaathai. Starring with Shalini, this movie became the ‘cult’ classic. This was a remake of Aniathipravu. Vijay got Tamil Nadu State Award for Best Actor.

 

Thullaadha Manamum Thullum (1999)

Directed by Ezhil, Thullaadha Manamum Thullum was Vijay’s one of the best movies ever. The movie starred Simran and went on to become a blockbuster.

Kushi (2000)


The debutant SJ Surya directed Vijay and debutant Jyothika. The 2000-movie Kushi was a super hit, earned Jyothika the TN State Award for the Best Female Debut.

Friends (2001)

In 2001, Siddique-directed Friends was released. Suriya was paired up with Vijay and it was the first blockbuster for Suriya. The movie ran for more than 175 days on theatres and was one of the top grossers of the year.

Thirumalai (2003)

After series of not so hit movies, 2003 saw Vijay’s rise once again. This was his first blockbuster as the action hero. Starring with Jyothika, Thirumalai became a super hit.

 

Ghilli (2004)

Vijay’s all-time best, Ghilli released in 2004. This remake movie crossed 40 crores. Directed by Dharani, this movie had Trisha as the female lead.

 

Pokkiri (2007)


The remake of Telugu movie Pokkiri, released under the same name and was directed by Prabhudeva. This movie starred Asin as the lead and was a super hit.

Sachin (2005)

Starring opposite Genelia, this movie was an average hit but till date is one of the best movies of Vijay.

Nanban (2012)

Director Shankar went for the 3 Idiots remake in 2012 and named it Nanban. This is the first and last remake movie of Shankar. The movie collected nearly 100 crores.

Thuppakki (2012)

The first movie of Vijay which entered the 100-crore club was Thuppakki, directed by A.R.Murugadoss. It was an action thriller in which Vijay played the role of an Intelligence officer in the Indian Army. This was his first of three collaboration with ARM.

Kaththi (2014)

Kaththi was another A.R.Murugadoss-movie in which Vijay acted. The film earned more than 100 crores post-release. Vijay played the dual role and Samantha played the female lead in this movie released in 2014.

Mersal (2017)

Vijay entered the 200-crore club with Mersal which was released on 2017 Diwali. Vijay played a triple role in this movie.

Sarkar (2018)

Finally, Sarkar was released on Diwali 2018, which is running successfully in theatres, till now. The movie has already crossed 200 crores in its first weekend itself.
